Medical terms simplified III

MEDICAL TERMS SIMPLIFIED 3

Now, let's finish what we started sometime ago.

Medical terms are usually exclusive in a sense to medical personnel. Sharing their meanings in a more relatable way is only in the bid to help you become more aware of your health.

Medicine cannot be compared to other professions because of the involvement of life as well as the wellness of the human being thus there is an increasing need for every individual to be knowledgeable about his/her health to a large extent. You can't afford to be lackadaisical about your health.

BLOOD PRESSURE
This is simply the pressure exerted by the blood on the vessel that contains it.  The vessel in this case refers to the Arteries and Veins.

Arteries and Veins can be likened to long pipes that run round the body and help carry blood and other materials.

The blood pressure is measured with a Sphygmomanometer (pronounced sfig-mo-ma-no-mi-ter).
This could be digital or manual.

Normal BP ranges from 110/70 - 140/80.

Generally it has been agreed that the normal blood pressure of an average adult is 120/80.

Its unit is millimeter mercury (mmHg).

Although lower values than this could be normal in certain people.

BP values are usually written in fractions which is the systolic/the diastolic pressure.

The systolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and fills them with blood.

The diastolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats.

Bottom line is that when you see BP values don't think they are improper fractions to be converted into mixed fractions. I bet you now know better.

HYPERTENSION

This is a state of health in which the blood pressure is constantly raised above the range that has been considered normal.

The pressure of the blood is too high in the vessels.

When the upper part of the fraction (the systolic) exceeds 140 and the lower part of the fraction (the diastolic) exceeds 80 constantly, it is termed HYPERTENSION.

Note: Soon we'll be learning about HYPERTENSION, it's causes and predisposing, it's prevention and treatment...

 Anticipate it.

HYPOTENSION
A lot of people know a lot about Hypertension but know a little or  nothing about Hypotension whereas both of them are like the two ends of a see-saw.

Hypotension is a state of health in which the blood pressure is low compared to the range that has been considered normal.
The pressure of the blood flowing in the blood vessels is too low.

This is a serious health condition as it could be associated with serious tiredness, sweating, the individual can even become unconscious because little blood is getting to the vital organs of the body.

More of this will be discussed in later posts...

When the upper part of the fraction (the systolic) is below 90 and the lower part of the fraction (the diastolic) exceeds 60 constantly, it is termed HYPOTENSION.

With this, we have come to the end of this series of MEDICAL TERMS SIMPLIFIED as regards Vital Signs.
